My PhD research, titled Becoming Other, explored the impact of virtual reality (VR) and virtual embodiment technologies on blurring the boundaries between self and other. Through a series of empirical experiments and art projects, I investigated how VR experiences can enhance empathy, alter perspective-taking, and foster self-compassion. By immersing participants in 180º stereoscopic VR scenarios, the studies demonstrated how virtual embodiment can shift individuals’ perceptions of identity and increase empathetic responses in both interpersonal and intergroup contexts. The research highlights VR’s potential as a tool for social change, art installations, and innovative storytelling.
